The Benefits of Xylitol in Low Carb Desserts

Banana Almond Butter Chia Seed Pudding

Did you know that there are some sugar free sweeteners that are actually good for you? These are the sweeteners that make low carb desserts possible. In fact, xylitol is a sweetener which is being discovered to have massive health benefits, especially for promoting mouth and dental health.

However, it has also been discovered to help all the following:

  • Fight and prevent cavities
  • Fight gingivitis
  • Strengthen bones and teeth
  • Reverse and reduce insulin resistance
  • Prevent metabolic syndrome
  • Prevent ear, sinus, and upper respiratory infections

That’s quite a long list of health benefits for a sweetener!

Xylitol is wonderful in hot beverages, for sprinkling on fruit, and to add to keto desserts recipes for sweetness. It’s also good for baking, like erythritol, and does not impart a bitter aftertaste. I use xylitol and monk fruit extract in my low carb ice cream, Kebby’s Sugar Free Ice Cream, which has less than 8 to 9 carbs a serving, depending upon the flavor you choose.

What is Xylitol?

Xylitol is naturally found in fruit and vegetables of all kinds. Our bodies actually manufacture xylitol during carbohydrate metabolism. We make 13 to 15 grams of xylitol a day. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol, much like mannitol, sorbitol, and erythritol (another healthy sweetener you might try). However, unlike many sweeteners, xylitol is actually health promoting rather than health harming.

Although xylitol tastes a lot like sugar, it has virtually no calories and lacks the bitter, strange aftertaste of other sweeteners. This is the reason why it is perfect for use on most low carb desserts and sugar free ice cream recipes.

Why is Xylitol so Healthy for Us?

First, xylitol is healthy for the teeth because it starves bacteria in the mouth, depriving them of the fermentable sugars they need to survive.

In fact, using xylitol after meals helps to starve the bacteria that causes cavities, called Streptococcus mutans, causing over 73% of the bacteria to die off. Xylitol also helps create a more alkaline environment in the mouth, which prevents decay, gingivitis, dry mouth, and bad breath.

Even healthier, still, is what xylitol does to prevent diabetes. Only half the xylitol consumed is absorbed, meaning it has 0 effects on insulin or blood sugars.

In studies, animals fed products containing xylitol had better blood sugars, glucose tolerance, less weight gain, a lower waist circumference, lower food intake, and more weight loss than animals fed sugar. In all kinds of studies, researchers have found that xylitol is an ideal sweetener for diabetics—and anyone, trying to avoid diabetes as well!

Xylitol also strengthens teeth and bones. Xylitol helps to remineralize tooth enamel and increase bone density. Today, researchers are looking to xylitol as a hopeful treatment for osteoporosis.

How to Use Xylitol for Low Carb Desserts to a Sweeter Keto Life

Xylitol is my favorite sweetener for coffee and colas. I buy xylitol cola drops and mix these with water. I especially love the root beer flavored drops. These drops are so much healthier than diet sodas and help crush sugar laden soda pop cravings.

Xylitol in coffee is a great hot beverage to enjoy that you can drink knowing you are actually preventing cavities and promoting health rather than risking it.

Finally, xylitol is a sweetener being embraced in more and more low sugar foods today—especially my keto-friendly ice cream—Kebby’s! Now everyone can enjoy low carb desserts minus the guilt!

Sugar Free Desserts: Salted Chocolate Chip Nut Butter Cookies

Breyers Carb Smart Ice Cream

What I see often is that some of the most stressed outpatients are the ones who stay away from salt. They eat the ketogenic diet that contains keto desserts and all these are sugar-free desserts and that’s good. It’s a good start. They love sugar free ice cream – and who wouldn’t since it won’t cause diabetes or sugar rushes. It’s a low carb ice cream.

The fact is that salt is essential for the body. Yes, you’ll find it in meats and dairy products and processed foods, but it may not be enough for you if you’re on a ketogenic diet. You may need to salt your foods, and when you do, your adrenal gland is happier for doing it. Salt contains sodium, which is an electrolyte and electrolytes are important for the body. You’ll die without them.

Yes, many people also don’t get enough potassium. You’ll hear me talking about that on my programs. The potassium comes in the diet by eating large quantities of vegetables.

So don’t be afraid of adding a little bit of salt to your sugar free desserts such as this salted chocolate chip nut butter cookie recipe or even your sugar free ice cream. The salt actually brings out the flavor of the chocolate much better!

Funny Ice Cream Facts

This cookie recipe goes really well with sugar-free ice cream and low carb ice cream.

  1. Ben and Jerry’s often retires ice cream flavors that aren’t popular. When they do, the flavors go into an actual physical graveyard. I wonder if they have a Paleo desserts section or keto desserts section in the graveyard!
  1. If an ice cream sundae was 12 foot tall, it would make about 70,000 people happy to eat a sundae of their own. I hope the next 12 foot sundae is among the sugar free desserts we can enjoy.
