Can you do intermittent fasting, a ketogenic diet, and still enjoy something sweet like sugar free desserts? Certainly. All you have to do is make sure to eat the sweet treat with the meal and choose a dessert that does not spike insulin. There are many different Paleo desserts / keto desserts you can choose from, including low carb ice cream/sugar free ice cream.
In fact, allowing yourself a sweet, sugar-free dessert can help you to lose weight more effectively than feeling deprived.
How Dieting Causes Weight Gain
If you know me pretty well, you know my program is all about suppressing fat-storing stress hormones like cortisol and your major fat storing hormone insulin.
Cortisol is a hormone that rises when the body is under stress of any kind—physical, emotional, or mental stress. Moving, running a marathon, being ill, and even dieting itself can cause stress.
When cortisol is spiked you’re going to shuttle all food you do eat to the fat stores to be stored for future energy—even carbs. This means you could starve yourself into some water and muscle loss –but you’re never going to actually burn off those fat stores.
When your body goes through stress its first line of response is to protect the body from harm. Your belly is the most vulnerable organ of your body. You have no bones there to shield your organs from damage.
Most of your important organs, like the brain and the heart for example, are protected by strong bones, like the rib cage or the skull. But not the intestines, liver, and pancreas! So when you’re stressed, your body starts padding these vulnerable organs in fat to protect you from that tiger it thinks you’re running from or the famine (diet!) you’re enduring at that time.
Insulin and Fat Storage
When you spike insulin, you cannot access your fat stores to use for energy. With all that sugar in the blood, the body doesn’t need to dip down into fat stores for energy—it has plenty of available energy in your bloodstream. So insulin causes weight gain and blocks fat burning. This is why we highly recommend switching to in sugar free desserts instead.
Deprivation and Fat Storage
Deprivation and dieting both cause cortisol to spike, meaning you’re not burning fat! In fact, this is why the ketogenic diet works so well—you’re eating lots of satisfying fat, nutrient dense vegetables, and protein to keep your body happy, healthy, and burning fat. You’re not in deprivation mode—you’re in satiety mode—which spikes all your feel good hormones instead.
An occasional treat eaten with meals that does not spike insulin can keep you out of deprivation mode and in fat burning mode. When you’re not feeling deprived, you stay out of fat storage, and in fat burning.
So you don’t have to avoid sweets completely to do keto, Intermittent Fasting, or burn fat. There are all kinds of treats you can enjoy which do not spike insulin, from my sugar free ice cream to sweeter tasting fat bombs.
